Founded by Captain John Philip as a colony, Sydney has gradually grown into the country's largest city by population, with more than 30 per cent of the country's population living, and visitors to the city can visit Sydney's rock district, where the settlement was first established.
Founding of Sydney
Humans lived in Sydney for at least 30,000 years, and in 1770 the first Europeans arrived in Australia, the fleet was led by Lieutenant James Cook, and in 1788 Sydney was founded as a colony by John Philip, the first European settlement in Australia, named sydney in honor of Thomas Townshend, the first Viscount Sydney, a British politician who died about five years before the city was founded. In 1842, after the city's rapid population and economic growth, it officially became a city.
