Great Barrier Reef

Experts believe parts of the Barrier Reef can date back as much as 18 million years, but most of the formations seen today have been formed in the last 2 million years. The upper layers of reefs near, from their current level or near sea level are about 125,000 years old. This level allowed reefs to form on Australia's continental outcrop.

Coral reefs are home to more fish than any other environment. About 3,000 known species of fish live in the seas around Australia. Approximately 1,500 of these species are in reef areas. Angelic fish, cod, sea devil, mackerel, butterfly fish and sargon all live and reproduce in rock waters.
